We had a few severe storms here in Texas last week. In fact, every time my two-year-old hears any type of siren now, she runs to the hall yelling, "Turnado, turnado!" A friend of mine related that her daughters saw the news coverage of a couple of the twisters and had a difficult time getting to sleep that night.
Right after Katrina hit, Sesame Workshop put out the DVD Friends to the Rescue, which follows the Sesame Street gang as they weather a hurricane that hits Sesame Street, destroying Big Bird's home. I highly recommend the DVD for preschool kids who are curious about or nervous about natural disasters. The great thing about the story, is that Big Bird experiences the disaster from a child-like perspective, and as he is empowered by his friends to take pro-active measures to rebuild his home, he shows viewing kids that even when disaster strikes, friends and families can pull together, and everything will work out okay.
