When and How to Introduce Children to the News

When and How to Introduce Children to the News Saturday September 11, 2010

Against the backdrop of the remembrance of September 11 all over the news, and the new controversies rising up involving burning things, my daughter came home from school with a big story about a fight that had occurred at school.  Sadly, I reflected upon what a pity it is that adults still seem to fight just like children on a playground -- only the disputes are about different subjects, and we have deadly weapons to back us up. How rare and weird that one man throwing a temper tantrum would get all the coverage of every news outlet as well as provoke imploring phone calls from important and famous people around the country. Now, I'm being facetious, and I don't mean to make a political statement or belittle the ideals that are important to any side, yet it feels like that is what we were reduced to in the few days that lead up to September 11, 2010.  I decided to share a little about current events to show my daughter that there will always be disagreements, but that ! cooler heads need to prevail with wiser resolutions to conflicts.

Since our hope for wise resolutions lies in the rising generation, I think it's important that we encourage our kids to follow and analyze current events. Hopefully, one day, our kids can be the cooler heads who continue whatever progress we make toward a peaceful world. Up until now, I haven't exposed my kids to the news or to much about current events, other than things like the Olympics or the Presidential election. But, I think my oldest (almost 8 years old)  is ready to dive into current affairs. I won't have her sit down and watch the news with us just yet -- I mean, that's too depressing even for me sometimes -- but maybe we'll just pick out the important stories of the week and watch them on the computer or read about them online or in a newspaper. Obviously, there is no perfect age to introduce kids to the news, as every kid is different, but I think that current events is a subject my daughter is finally old enough to appreciate, learn from, and enjoy.

Do you watch the news with your kids? How and when does your family discuss current events?
