Bambi Diamond Edition is available now on Blu-ray (combo pack) and DVD. Like the past Disney Diamond Editions, Snow White and Beauty and the Beast, Bambi looks and sounds fabulous. The colors pop off the screen and the detail of the artwork, which Walt Disney insisted be done using actual oil paints, is really breathtaking.
Uniquely, Bambi has a gentle (in pacing) yet fulfilling storyline and sincere characters that live up to the rich animation and detailed backgrounds. This coming-of-age tale, like The Lion King which came after it, portrays the circle of life in all it's majesty -- both miraculous and devastating, heart-breaking and inspiring. The story is brought to life through characters who convey an individual charm, each all his or her own.
I had the pleasure last week of speaking Donnie Dunagan, the voice of young Bambi. You might be surprised to know that the young boy, who acted in several big films before his role as the face model and voice of Bambi, never did any films after that. Donnie went on to become a highly decorated Marine -- the youngest Marine drill instructor ever, he retired as a Major. He also obtained a Masters degree in Engineering Management. Today, he spends his time doing volunteer work tutoring kids and helping to feed the hungry.
You know, I've talked to well known Hollywood movie stars with no problem, but I was very intimidated to talk to this man. My grandfather served in the Air Force, and I grew up with a healthy respect -- an awe and admiration -- for those who serve our country. As I got on the phone with Donnie and fumbled out a, "Hello...Sir," I was immediately put at ease by his friendly voice and easygoing willingness to discuss all things Bambi and more. Even almost 70 years after working on Bambi, Mr. Dunagan still has a great respect for Mr. Disney, and an admiration for the amazing artistry and skillful storytelling that went into making Bambi.
