The Effects of 3D Viewing on Kids

The Effects of 3D Viewing on Kids Monday August 16, 2010

In an article posted on Gamasutra, Dr. Mark Borchert, an L.A.-based ophthalmologist with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, comments on the possible ill effects of 3D viewing saying, "It's not likely to cause any permanent harm to vision." However, Dr. Borchert, who works at The Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, goes on to say that 3D viewing could possibly have harmful effects on kids younger than four.

The 3D market has already hit the main stream in theaters, and 3D TVs and gaming systems are close at hand. If all of this new technology catches on, this article leads me to believe that young children could absolutely be at risk. We already worry about kids who watch too much regular TV, or who spend too much time playing video games or on the computer, but the 3D element adds another component of concern, and that concern needs to be fully and clearly addressed by doctors and all involved industries before 3D TV becomes more prolific and things like the Nintendo 3DS  hit the market.
