Why did you leave the TV on? -- Oh, I "forgot"

Why did you leave the TV on? -- Oh, I "forgot" Sunday August 1, 2010

Our kids often leave the TV on after watching it or playing a game and have to be reminded to turn it off. Sometimes, they try to turn it off, but they don't give the remote enough time for all of the components to turn off and the TV ends up being left on with a dark screen, and they don't even notice -- or maybe they do and just don't care. Enter a new message that reads, "Lamp needs to be replaced." This message comes on for a few seconds every time we turn on the TV now. "What does that mean?" asked our oldest daughter. "It means the lamp is going to burn out and the TV won't work any more. It happens to all TVs eventually, but much faster if the TV gets left on all the time," replied Dad.

Suddenly, "I forgot" is out the window and we've got the little TV police running around the house. Now, days after the initial message, the oldest turned on the TV to sing a song on her karaoke game, and when she was finished, she stood there and watched to make sure the TV actually turned all the way off. The kids now walk into the room and say, "Why's the TV on?" Hilarious. I mean, it's not like we've never asked them to make sure that they turn the TV off before. I'm thinking if I just tuck that new lamp we already bought away, and we go without a TV for a week or two after the lamp goes out completely, this new habit might actually stick.
