Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 opened last night, and social media sites were teaming with excited comments from kids and adults anticipating the experience or commenting on the movie after seeing it. What great fun it is to have a story that takes hold of so many. J.K. Rowling created a masterpiece in her books about a unique boy in a magical world, and the movies, for the most part, haven't been disappointing either.
Rowling's books are a bit unique in that they start off decidedly kid friendly, very appropriate for kids ages about eight and up. As the story progresses, though, the books become more mature; they grow in content and complexity as Harry grows. This quality makes for fascinating reading for tweens, teens, and adults, but poses somewhat of a problem for parents, especially as far as the movies go. The first few movies are generally tame and basically kid friendly for many kids about age seven and up (depending on the kids' level of tolerance for scary scenes). The movies also become darker, though, and other mature content is thrown in here and there, making many of them earn a PG-13 rating. With so many kids talking about the books and movies at school, the series puts the PG-13 decision on a lot of parents' plates a little faster than it might have otherwise. Our oldest daughter is one of those poor kids who has seen the first three movies, but won't be seeing the rest ! for a few years.
If you had a chance to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 already, what did you think? Did the movie live up to the hype? Did you take your kids? What age group do you think the movie is appropriate for? Write your own Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 movie review and help other parents who may be trying to decide whether or not to take their kids.
