Although I know I went through the same thing as a kid, it still cracks me up how preschoolers' best friends become despised enemies once said preschoolers get to first or second grade. For a little girl who thought Barney was the bomb and would jump on the bed singing his songs at the top of her lungs just a few short years ago, the new comical pass time is teaching her little sisters Barney bashing songs she learns at school. How lovely it is when we're in the middle of a store and my two-year-old repeats a loud rendition of "ABCDEFG Barney Is My Eminy (2yo version of enemy). Lock him up, I don't care. I'll pull down his underwear..." We have a few more choice melodies about the big purple dino too, and she knows them all by heart.
At the beginning of the school year, yes, only a few short months ago, my Kindergartner insisted on Dora shoes. But now, Dora is so yesterday. She won't even admit that she used to watch her. Poor Dora.
Letting go of preschool TV friends is a rite of passage for kids who are starting school, but for us parents, it can be a little sad. Luckily, we are still hanging on to The Backyardigans, Tinker Bell, and Strawberry Shortcake. Secretly, though, although Barney really is on the outs, I know they all still like Dora, especially the double length adventures that involve princesses and fairies.
