Over the last decade or so, children's TV networks have increasingly focused on helping kids learn healthy habits through shorts, specials, and PSAs. Now, First Lady Michelle Obama is kicking it up a notch. Joining her "Let's Move" campaign with kids' TV networks, Michelle supported Nickelodeon's recent Worldwide Day of Play, and Disney has announced a new campaign, "The Magic of Healthy Living," which will include public service announcements featuring First Lady Michelle Obama and young Disney stars. Here are a few highlights of the new campaign:
- A year-long series of television public service announcements featuring Mrs. Obama and Disney Channel stars like Nick Jonas.
- Two new websites from Disney: one to engage and activate kids about healthy living (Disney.com/healthyfun) and another to provide ideas and resources for parents (Family.com/healthymagic).
- A national essay contest calling on kids to write about ideas for living a healthy life at home, at school or in their communities. The contest will open for entries next month and will culminate in a special Disney Magic of Healthy Living - The Weekend event at Walt Disney World Resort for 50 winners from across the U.S. For more information, visit Disney.com/healthyfun.
- A $1 million grant from Disney will help to build play spaces and gardens in 10 underserved communities nationwide.
I love the added emphasis the First Lady has put on health and fitness. The "Let's Move" campaign is not just good for kids, it's great for everyone. Slowly, as more people have made a commitment to eat healthier food, grocery stores are carrying more natural products, and restaurants have added a few healthy options to the menu. But, we still have a long way to go. The more people start demanding quality, healthy food, the easier it will become to find and afford, and the easier it will be for kids to grab healthy options instead of fast food, processed food and junk food. With all of the strides we have made in the medical world that have helped us live longer, I can only imagine what a rising generation armed with nutritional knowledge and a commitment to healthy living could accomplish.
