In going through the news today, I came across this article by Bonnie Rochman reminding us of the danger TVs pose to kids. I am used to writing about the potential danger that TV content may present for kids, but there is also a very real physical danger. Quoting the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the article states that every two weeks, a child dies because an unsecured piece of furniture topples over. Many times, TVs are the heavy objects that topple over and injure children.
We have bolted our bookshelves to the walls, but our TV is fairly sturdy on the low stand in our living room. Still, I think after reading that article, I am going to have my husband take a look at it and re-access whether or not we should secure it to the wall as well.
To check out what a TV anchoring system might look like, see this anti-tip anchoring system for an example. And, if you're paranoid like me and want to make sure you're covered in the safety department, read Hidden Dangers and Child Safety, from About.com's guide to Pediatrics, which lists other child safety concerns you might need to be aware of.
