Available for the first time on DVD this Valentine's Season, A Charlie Brown Valentine features the title episode as well as "Someday You'll Find Her, Charlie Brown." Now, "A Charlie Brown Valentine" is not to be confused with "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown," which is an original 1970s episode that is also available on DVD. "A Charlie Brown Valentine" is a newer episode which finds Charlie Brown obsessing over how to give a valentine to that Little Red-Haired Girl. Die hard fans of the Peanuts may not love this episode as much as the originals, and the characters definitely seem a little different, but the show is a nice little treat as far as new Valentine's Day content goes.
Although the animation looks slightly different (this was the first special to air after the death of Charles M. Schulz, and it aired in 2002), the episode was based directly on the cartoon strip and has a few classic lines that make it nostalgic and fun. Charlie Brown is trying to work up the courage to talk to the Little Red-Haired Girl throughout the movie, and he delivers golden nuggets like, "I'll tell that Little Red-Haired Girl that I love her. Then I'll give her a big hug. Then I'll go bungee jumping from the moon." Awww. Some of the exchanges between Lucy and Schroeder and Sally and Linus also fit the cute and clever bill.
Now, "Someday You'll Find Her, Charlie Brown" is not my favorite. This one finds Charlie obsessing over another little girl -- one he saw for a brief moment on a TV airing of a sports event. He enlists the help of Linus to track the little girl down, and since we watched it directly after the first special, it really felt like good ol' Chuck was cheating on the Little Red-Haired Girl the whole time. The episode is not one anyone in our family will likely be inspired to watch again.
