Retell the Story

Retell the Story - Ready for School Friday January 7, 2011

Having had two kiddos go through Kindergarten now, I have seen that a clear goal of the teachers is to help kids learn how to retell a story they just read. The retelling skill is even tested as part of the standardized reading tests they give the early elementary kids at our schools. A great way to help kids practice the art of storytelling is by having them retell the story of TV show episodes or movies as well. Parents can even model the skill by retelling the story from a show to a child who can't even talk yet.

I have tried to do this, although not consistently, but I saw a friend of mine dramatically change her child's speaking abilities through retelling. She would consistently ask her child to tell her about TV shows or movies her little girl had just watched, and she would also do it with shows that were her little girl's favorites that she watched all the time. I have never seen a child more able to tell a story before age two than her little girl. She also began making up her own stories, a skill which follows naturally once kids learn what a story is and how to retell it. What a great gift my friend gave her child, not only in helping her develop an important early literacy skill, but also in all those moments they spent talking together.
