I'm so excited to be able to say that this post is coming to you inspired by the gorgeous Hollywood hillside view out my hotel window. I am here in Hollywood with a group of writers and mom bloggers to get an up close and personal preview of the diverse slate of Disney theatrical releases coming up in 2011, especially the film Gnomeo & Juliet, which hits theaters February 11. Disney films are such a huge share of the family film industry, so I am thrilled to have an opportunity to actually be here to get the inside scoop on what's in store and share it with everyone. Up first: Gnomeo & Juliet!
Gnomeo & Juliet gives us a "garden variety" spin on the Shakespearean tale with a story about two star-crossed lovers from the wrong side of the fence. Gnomeo (voice of James McAvoy) comes from the garden of the blue gnomes, while Juliet (voice of Emily Blunt) hails from the other side of the fence, where red gnomes rule. The Blues and the Reds have been at odds for as long as anyone can remember, but when Gnomeo and Juliet find each other, they put aside their colorful differences and hope for a happy ending.
Last night, I attended a screening of Gnomeo & Juliet. My full review of the movie will post opening week, but what I can say for now, is that we were all quite pleasantly surprised. The film features both classic and new music from Elton John, and he is also the executive producer, so the film is full of clever, quirky fun, and the music gives a rich and familiar underscore to the story. Later today, I will get a chance to talk with Elton, James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, and director Kelly Asbury, so there are many more details to come about Gnomeo & Juliet, including red carpet premiere coverage tomorrow!
Over the next couple of days, we will also take a look at some of the other Disney films coming out this year, like the animated feature Mars Needs Moms ; DisneyNature's now traditional Earth Day offering, which this year is African Cats; a couple of highly anticipated sequels and more.
