Nick News with Linda Ellerbee is a news program for kids that tackles the important issues of our day in a way that kids can understand. What is great about the show, is that it doesn't just spew out news and information at viewing kids, rather, one single issue is discussed in each episode, and real kids grappling with the issue tell their stories and share their insights. Kids get to see how the issues affect real kids in the real world.
In celebration of Black History Month, host Linda Ellerbee dives into some of the less well-known wisdom of Martin Luther King, Jr. to help kids learn more about civil rights, service and more. The episode is divided into segments according to different quotes by Dr. King, during which kids from around the country discuss their experiences, triumphs and struggles. Among my favorite MLK quotes discussed is, "Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree." Other great quotes explored in depth in the show are also worth mentioning:
- "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
- "Human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals."
- "Life's most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?"
- "Hate is too great a burden to bear. I have decided to love."
The show premieres Sunday, Feb. 13, at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. (Nick News is recommended for kids about 10 years old and up.) You can find out more about the show, as well as hear some thoughts on civil rights and more from Linda Ellerbee in my interview with Linda Ellerbee on "Beyond I Have a Dream. I will admit, it was a bit daunting asking questions of an award-winning question asker, but Linda was absolutely lovely to talk to, and I really enjoyed hearing her thoughts on civil rights and delivering the news to kids.
