They both start with "R," they both come out the first half of this year, they're both new stories about new critter friends... For today's post in this week's series on upcoming family theatrical releases 2011, let's take a closer look at Rango and Rio!
First up, opening in theaters March 4, is Rango. Rango is a chameleon with an identity crisis. He wants to be a Western hero, and when he arrives in a town that is in need of just such a hero, he is forced into the part. That's pretty much all we know at this point -- except that said Chameleon is voiced by Johnny Depp. Ah, Rango suddenly becomes a little more intriguing. I have an immense respect for Johnny Depp as an actor; however, many of his recent roles have been a little too similar. When I saw Alice in Wonderland, I felt like I was watching Willy Wonka act out the part of the Mad Hatter with a little bit of Captain Jack Sparrow flair. But, in the movie trailer for Rango, I didn't even recognize his voice. This movie looks like it could be fun. (Photo © Paramount)

Rio opens in theaters on April 15, a little over a month after the chameleon. Rio is a 3D animated adventure-comedy about Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there's another -- and that she's a she -- he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio de Janeiro. He meets the high-flying and independent Jewel, and finds himself on a Brazilian adventure, where he learns a few life lessons Latin-style.
Rio is brought to us by the creators of Ice Age, and Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, and George Lopez lend their voices to our new feathered friends. I'm interested to see how the animation of Brazil looks in this film. I went to Brazil once, but we didn't go to Rio; we were warned not to, actually. I had really wanted to see the beautiful beaches and experience the energy that seems to emanate from the city, so I am always interested in movies set in Rio, even animated ones. Also, this movie will be presented in 3D, so maybe it will be just like being there...(Photo © 20th Century Fox)
