Should Movies Replace Recess?

Should Movies Replace Recess? Monday February 21, 2011

During all of the recent snow days we've had here in Texas, I discovered that when recess is canceled, the kids stay in and watch movies. In talking with teachers in other parts of the country, I found out that it's actually common to put a movie on when the kids can't go out, which happens a lot more in places that are actually supposed to have cold and snowy winters, and sometimes teachers put movies on even more frequently.  I am at least thankful that at our school they try to put on educational movies like Magic School Bus episodes. Still, if kids can't go out, shouldn't they play games in the classroom? Maybe they need parents to donate some games for the teachers to use on inclement weather days and testing days that require recess to be canceled?

If the teachers need some down time and an educational but fun movie is the only way they can give everyone a break when recess is canceled, then I'm not going to throw a fit about that. But in general, movies in school should be reserved for special occasions, like when they watch The Polar Express at Christmastime (when they study the book as well). Or, obviously if there is an educational DVD about a subject kids are studying and the teacher needs to show it in order to provide a better understanding. But no Disney movies just to fill the time, please.
