Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader Friday December 10, 2010

The first of the Narnia movies to be made by Fox, Voyage of the Dawn Treader continues the tales of Narnia with an adventure on the high seas. Lucy, Edmond, and their intolerable cousin Eustace are caught up on board the Dawn Treader, captained by none other than Prince Caspian, and they soon find out that their mission is gravely important to the future of Narnia.

Fox did a fabulous job with the movie. As far as Narnia movies go, Dawn Treader does not have quite as deep of a story line as previous movies, but that is in line with the book itself. What the movie has more of, though, is fantastic action and adventure. If you're looking for a great family adventure, Voyage of the Dawn Treader will hit the mark for those with at least school age kids. However, parents should know that the movie contains a lot of dumbed down violence, which brings up an interesting question: Is violence that portrays grand battles with little to no blood or lasting injury really better for kids?

Voyage of the Dawn Treader contains some pretty up close and personal brutal combat scenes. We don't see much blood, though, so kids are spared the sight of blood and gore, but now they have an image of people enduring all kinds of physical trauma with little manifestation of consequence. Parents should know that, while  rated only PG, the movie contains violence, a few scenes with scary monsters, and some possibly disturbing themes such as slavery. These scenes and others could be extremely frightening or disturbing to young kids.
