With strong DVD and Blu-ray sales in the first few weeks, Avatar has set some new records and is on track to becoming the highest selling DVD of all time. The movie will likely continue to see strong sales, and then get another huge spike around November if the next release date holds. Both the Blu-ray and DVD copies feature the movie only. A new release with bonus features and 3D capability is set for November of this year. For Avatar fans, just owning the movie for home viewing seems to be enough to go out and buy the DVD or Blu-ray currently available. But, I can imagine most people are going to end up with two copies. For one thing, the release later this year will contain bonus features that fans will not likely want to miss. And more importantly, those with 3D capable theater systems will want the new experience.
I was talking with my husband about the fact that this movie is one of the only movies that I have really noticed a big difference between the theater experience and the home viewing experience. Avatar is just flat out better in 3D. Just being dorky, we assigned arbitrary percentages to how much more we liked the movie in theaters than at home. He said he liked the movie 17.6% better in 3D at the theater, while I liked it 30% more in 3D at the theater. How's that for scientific?
The PG-13 movie has a very strong environmental message, depicting a mystical world whose inhabitants are one with nature. The trouble comes when humans move in and start trying to mine their world for a precious metal. This movie contains heavy violence and some sensual scenes, so if you're on the fence about letting your kids see it, preview the movie first or see our Avatar review for parents.
So, what is currently the best selling DVD of all time? -- the Disney/Pixar movie Finding Nemo, which was released in 2003. Holding the record for that long against some major blockbuster hits over the years is an impressive feat for Nemo. With the rate Pixar is going with their sequels, I'm just waiting for an announcement about Finding Nemo 2, but Pixar's sudden love for sequels is a whole other topic in itself (which we will soon be discussing in detail I'm sure).
