Disney/ABC Television Group is set to ditch SOAPNet (with DVRs, who needs a soap rerun channel?) and launch Disney Junior, a new 24-hour basic cable/satellite channel and online site devoted to preschoolers. Disney Junior will focus on classic and new stories and characters with an emphasis on specific learning and development themes designed for kids age 2-7. In addition to educational programming, Disney Junior will showcase popular Disney movies that are age appropriate for the target audience. The channel is not going to debut in the U.S. until 2012, but look for the new Disney Junior brand name to pop up during what is now Playhouse Disney, the Disney Channel morning block of programming for preschoolers.
